What to sort out in your home country before relocating to Dubai

Most guides about moving to Dubai start at the wrong end: the visa, the apartment, the license. In practice, the decisions that matter most are the ones you make in your home country before you leave. They determine your tax position, what documentation you can obtain later, and how clean your exit is. This guide is general and applies across home countries; the specific rules are your home country's, so use it as an agenda for a conversation with your own adviser, not as advice.

Your tax residency does not end automatically

A UAE residence visa does not by itself change your tax liability in your home country. Tax residency ends according to your home country's rules, which typically look at housing, family, economic ties and the number of days you continue to spend there. Clarify with your own tax adviser what ending tax residency requires in your country, and what documentation you should keep as evidence of the move.

Housing and formal registrations

  • What happens to your home matters in many countries' residency rules: keeping a home available can keep you tax resident. Clarify whether you need to sell, rent out on certain terms, or can keep it.
  • Deregister where your country has a population register, and note the date.
  • Update your address with banks, pension providers and insurers, and check which of your accounts and policies can be kept as a non-resident.

Assets, pensions and exit rules

Some countries tax unrealised gains on shares and other assets when you emigrate, and pension schemes often have their own rules for non-residents. Get a written overview from your adviser of what leaving triggers in your case before you set a moving date, not after.

Documentation to bring

  • Attested civil documents where relevant (marriage, birth certificates for family visas)
  • Recent bank statements and proof of address, which you will need for UAE onboarding
  • Diplomas or professional credentials where your activity requires them

Timing the move

The order of operations matters: in many countries the date your tax residency ends depends on when housing and registrations change, not when you land in Dubai. Plan the home-country steps and the UAE steps as one timeline. Dubai Tradeshore handles the UAE side, from company setup to residence visas; the home-country side belongs with your own adviser, and the two should talk to the same calendar.
