Working with sustainability?

Here is what to know for success in Dubai

Aiming for net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the UAE is determined to make crucial progress toward sustainability and become one of the world’s leading economies within the field. This is a necessary step for our planet. At the same time, green practices are some of the most important levers for business – when it is authentic and done right. In this blog, we will cover the sustainability opportunities in Dubai and tell you the dos and don’ts of greener business practices.

Grants and incentives to inspire sustainable practices

Dubai seeks to be the world’s most prosperous financial hub, attracting ambitious business owners and entrepreneurs from all over the world in doing so. For this, the government is ready to go to great lengths. That is why the UAE offers a range of benefits for companies and startups that operate in environmentally friendly fields or who are looking to adapt green business practices to their company.

Some of these benefits include:

  • Green visa: Sustainability investors can apply for a long-term UAE residency of 10 years.
  • Fee reductions: Business owners that operate in some of the UAE’s free zones can benefit from lower licensing fees for their companies and faster approvals for their sustainable projects.
  • Dubai Green Fund: Companies operating in the solar energy, water conservation, and waste management fields can apply for grants of up to AED 500,000.

The UAE is not only looking for entrepreneurs with ambitions – they are looking for companies that show real traction. In other words, if you have a solid business plan for the future, Dubai is here to give you the financial push you need to fuel your company.

Leading sectors in sustainability in Dubai

Driven by the aggressive national net zero targets and other green initiatives, Dubai’s sustainability sector is set in motion and thriving. Some of the most prevalent green business ventures in Dubai are:

Sustainable fashion: Fueled by eco-conscious consumers, the demand for businesses that upcycle clothes and employ ethically produced textiles as well as organic fabrics is on the rise in Dubai.

Organic farming: Advanced agricultural technologies such as hydroponics are becoming highly lucrative in the harsh desert climates that makes agriculture and food security challenging in the UAE.

Biodegradable packaging: The shift to circular economies has created high demand for plant-based and compostable packaging alternatives in the food and beverage sectors.

Solar energy: With increasing demands for solar maintenance for the booming commercial and residential rooftop sectors, the solar energy sector is the cornerstone of the UAE’s renewable strategy.

Eco-consulting: The eco-consulting field in particular is becoming significant as businesses need experts to guide them in adhering to the UAE’s mandatory corporate climate laws and ESG reporting requirements.

Consider getting certifications that legitimize your sustainability efforts, especially if you operate in any of the sectors mentioned above. If your company specializes in the field of environmental management, ISO 14001 is recommended. LEED is recommended if you work with green buildings. Do your research and find the certifications relevant to your business.

Communicate your green business practices

Do not forget to tailor an effective marketing strategy to let the world know about your sustainability practices. Strive to be a thought leader within your field, for instance by publishing white papers, how-to guides, or blog articles on your website.

Remember to direct your stakeholders to your expert content through your newsletter and social media channels. Being active on social media platforms is particularly crucial to reach a wider audience. Post content that showcases your expertise and know-how while presenting your company as the go-to within your field.

And be transparent. Do not only tell your customers and stakeholders that your business is sustainable: explain how your company works for sustainability. Publish comprehensive business reports with measurable results such as energy saved and materials recycled. Give your stakeholders insight into your green business practices.

Walk the talk: Avoid greenwashing at all costs

One, crucially important thing is to never promise more than you actually do for the planet. Therefore, it is always safer to use terms such as “greener”, “more sustainable”, and “more eco-friendly”, rather than “green”, “sustainable”, or “eco-friendly”. Stating that your business is sustainable can give off the impression that all your processes – from your products and services to your business practices – are 100% sustainable. However, being completely eco-friendly is impossible for any company – even for the biggest players.

Penalties for greenwashing are enormous and can amount to several millions or billions, depending on the jurisdiction, the financial scale of your business, and the severity of the greenwashing. In the UAE, enforcement is governed by strict federal regulations and consumer protection laws. Fines for misleading sustainability claims can range from AED 50,000 to AED 2 million. Depending on the nature of the greenwashing, it can also lead to license suspension and potential imprisonment.

Another smart step to take for authenticity would be to collaborate with the government or local NGOs. By doing so, you can further your own sustainability practices, contribute to making your local and/or the national environment more eco-friendly, and show the world that you mean it when you say your company works for a greener future.
